Neurosciences Program at WellSpan Health Looks Ahead

The highly experienced team at WellSpan Health provides leading-edge neuroscience services, including adult and pediatric neurology, neurosurgery, physiatry, spine and brain injury care, a world-class stroke program recognized for excellence, and a unique pain program that is the first of its kind in the country. The team already offers advanced capabilities in other areas of specialization, including epilepsy management and movement disorders, and is looking for further expansion in those fields. The Neuroscience team also works with other experts to advance concussion treatment and dementia care.

“We have a tradition of clinical excellence and many high-quality, high-safety programs, including a Level 1 trauma center and comprehensive stroke center,” says Ben Roitberg, MD, neurosurgeon and Chief Medical Officer of the Neurosciences Service Line at WellSpan Health. “Our surgeons and endovascular specialists routinely perform a high volume of complex operations. No other team in the region has more experience with neurovascular conditions, acute spine fractures and other conditions. Our doctors have tremendous experience and achieve excellent outcomes.”

Unique, Patient-Centered Care

WellSpan Health offers advanced technology in a patient-centered environment at facilities throughout the region. Their dedication to excellence and caring for the whole patient leads to recognition and innovation, particularly in stroke care and pain treatment. WellSpan York Hospital is one of only two hospitals in the region certified as a comprehensive stroke center by The Joint Commission. All the community hospitals within WellSpan Health have been designated as primary stroke centers.

“We are among the top facilities in the country for stroke care, and our outcomes are better than the national average,” Dr. Roitberg says. “In addition to strokes, our treatment of aneurysms and other neurovascular conditions is similar to that found in top institutions in the country.”

Holistic pain management is another focus area at WellSpan Health. An innovative new program called the Restorative Pain Program is designed for patients with chronic pain caused by neurological issues or other conditions.

“We are the first integrated, multi-hospital system in the country to use this new model,” Dr. Roitberg says. “It’s an intensive, transdisciplinary program that includes physical therapy, behavioral health, acupuncture, massage, nutrition and other specialties. Providers work in an integrated fashion to help people with chronic pain become more functional and less dependent on medication.”

Looking to the Future

Dr. Roitberg and the team at WellSpan Health plan to expand their neurosciences services in various ways. “We have top-of-the-line acute care, and we want to expand access to preventive care,” Dr. Roitberg says. “We are also working to create an easier pathway to first-class care for epilepsy, movement disorders, dementia and other areas of neurology, as well as care for patients with concussions.”

To meet these goals, the neurosciences team will continue to collaborate closely with other disciplines to develop comprehensive care and treatment modalities tailored to the patients they serve.

“We want to enhance the ecosystem around the patient, where the patient is the focus and all services revolve around them,” Dr. Roitberg says. “Going forward, we’re looking to expand, innovate and focus on a three-dimensional care model.”
